We have just returned from our second visit to la Port this year and agree with the other reviewers, the only thing Chris and Sharon can't do anything about is the weather(so they need to get that sorted out before our next visit!) Anything else they can help with, they certainly will(we actually had our first taste of Mars Bar ice cream from their freezer, thanks!) We are storing with them now, so will go back as soon as we can, we love the surrounding areas, friendly and peaceful and if you want hustle and bustle you don't have far to go to find it. We agree with review regarding Mont st Michel, but it comes down to personal taste and there are many things to see and do that don't cost anything apart from your petrol of course (we found a beautiful park called Mont Cerisey tucked away near Flers, lovely just to sit or they have tennis courts, table tennis, crazy golf, paddling pool etc and even a bar, but its vast and not a bit commercial. We are sure there are many more places we havent yet discovered, usually we find the best places by accident! We spent 10 glorious days at La Porte. We wanted somewhere un-commercial and central to explore Normandy, particularly the D Day Landing beaches. We also wanted to take in a stage of the Tour de France (Avranches to Mont St Michel - Stage 11). We couldn't have picked a better spot. We arrived late after a very wet night in Brugge and were welcomed by Chris and Sharon and looked after as if we were returning friends. The site is small, quiet and very well equipped (if Chris and Sharon haven't got it, you don't need it!). Add a horse, a donkey, a friendly dog and 5 free and happy chickens to make this a real chill-out place to be.We will definitely be going back. Very pleasant site for 6 or so vans. Flat, spacious grass pitches at the end of a quiet lane. Easy access from the main Villedieu - Vire road - well signposted. A very warm and relaxed welcome from the English owners - and friendly waves from the neighbours suggest a site in harmony with its surroundings. Sharon and Chris offer meals and breakfasts which we didn't take advantage of this time - but might in the future. We stopped 2 nights, and on Sharon's advice found a helpful vet in the next town who gave our dogs the injections for returning to UK. The main road passes through a forest with plenty of picnic places and dog walks only 5 minutes from the site. The single toilet and shower are fine for a site of this size. This is a site to relax and enjoy Normandy countryside, and to visit Villedieu, Vire and the beaches around Granville (40 minutes). A great place to slow down and recharge.

We stayed at La Porte for 1 night whilst on a cycle camping trip from St Malo to Calais. Chris made us feel very welcome and even provided a fold up picnic table to save us our usual floor sitting. The site and area are very quiet, despite being close to a rail line (trains are infrequent and don't run during the night). Facilities are basic but very clean and functional. We couldn't have asked for more. La Porte is thoroughly recommended. Chris recommended a bar to us in Bayeux which was our next stop. We visited and it was very nice to be made similarly welcome there, despite our poor French. We visited Mont St Michel the day before. This has been made into a huge tourist attraction of the sort you might expect at Disney World, Florida. It is quite hideous. My recommendation would be to photograph it from the coastal road east of Arromanches and give the visit a miss - unless you like that sort of thing. Pedigree 1
We've just returned from 4 nights at La Porte with our tent. Upon arrival, there was no-one to greet us but a note to say 'set up where you like' so we picked our spot and began setting up camp. While erecting the tent, Chris & Sharon came to greet us and offer any help. We had asked to borrow a bbq which they very kindly lent to us along with the offer of a 4 seater camping picnic table. We don't usually camp so were very grateful for their generous offer. The site is very basic, exactly what we wanted though. There was one toilet and a wet room shower, both were imaculate at all times. The field was a good size and with only 6 pitches, we weren't close to the other caravanners but enough to chat about our days out and one evening we all shared a drink along with Chris and Sharon. There are chickens, Chester the dog, Donke (the donkey) and Giselle a lovely pony so if you like animals, you'll enjoy this place. We didn't venture into Courson really although there is a small bar that does food there and a little shop. We used the supermarket in a nearby town, St Sever for our immediate supplies. There are a couple of bars here too. We spent more time in Villedieu-les-Poêles where there is an excellent market on a Wednesday morning, plenty of shops, restaurants and bars. We ate at an excellent place called Le Samovar, not much English spoken so used my pigeon French to order and had an amazing meal. Le Mont St. Michel is 45 mins away and Bayeaux 1 hour. The site is in an excellent location for all the Normandy tourist places. We also visit Granville which is a large town, quite scruffy but had beautiful cliff walks with great views. There was a lovely beach just up from there at Breville Sur Mer. All in all, an excellent stay. Chris and Sharon are lovely people and couldn't do enough for us. I would absolutely recommend this site to anyone. Lynne
